Tips for Using Portable Oxygen Concentrators

Using a portable oxygen concentrator (POC) can be an effective way to manage oxygen therapy while on the go. POCs are designed to provide continuous and safe oxygen delivery, which is especially important for people who need supplemental oxygen due to pulmonary disease or other medical conditions. Here are some tips for using a POC effectively:

1. Make sure the device is in good working order. Before each use, check your POC’s battery level and inspect it for any signs of damage or wear. Replace worn components as needed, and make sure all electrical connections are secure.

2. Use the correct size cannula and tubing when connecting your POC to your nasal cannula or mask tubing. The wrong size tubing may not deliver enough airflow or could create back pressure that affects the device’s performance.

3. Be aware of altitude changes when using a POC in mountainous areas or at high altitudes (above 8,000 feet). Most devices will automatically adjust their output according to atmospheric pressure changes; however, some users find it helpful to monitor their pulse oximetry readings while changing elevation so they can adjust their own breathing rate if necessary.

4. Monitor daily usage time with your device’s built-in timer feature so you don’t exceed recommended usage limits per day that may be based on battery life, manufacturer specs, etc. A timer will also help you track how much time has elapsed since the last charging/servicing was done; be sure to follow all recommended service intervals as well as safety guidelines such as never leaving your device unattended while charging or running on its internal batteries alone (instead use an external power source).

5. Consider a backup plan if you need extended use away from home—such as an external battery pack—so that you always have access to supplemental oxygen even if your primary power source isn’t available. Additionally, look into carrying extra supplies such as spare cannulas, filters, tubing, etc., just in case something should happen during travel.

6. Lastly, remember that every patient’s needs are different; talk with your healthcare provider about what type of portable oxygen concentrator might best suit your situation prior to making any purchase decisions.
